Built in 1846 by King Rama III, the striking Loha Prasat (‘metal castle’) of the Wat Ratchanaddaram complex is comprised of multiple concentric square levels built on geometrically aligned pillars. The levels feature 37 black metal spires, representing each of the 37 virtues required for enlightenment, with a relic of the Buddha at the highest level. Loha Prasart was inspired by similar temples in India and Sri Lanka – neither of which remains in existence today.
A visit to Loha Prasat is a must if you happen to be on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue. Children will enjoy its maze-like configuration and spiral staircase. The castle is especially magical at night when it is lit up against the skyline of historic Bangkok – a sight sure to delight adults and kids alike. You can also wander around the serene ground of Wat Ratchanaddaram, admiring its golden seated Buddha, mural paintings and door carvings. There is also an interesting amulet market at the back of Loha Prasart.
Plan for a half-day excursion and take in nearby sights of old Bangkok, including Wat Saket and the Democracy Monument.
