The Deluxe Saffron Cruise by Banyan Tree is a wonderful opportunity for a few hours of “Parents Only Time.” Whether you choose to partake the Sunset Cruise, with majestic views of Wat Arun and the Grand Palace (among other notable sights), or the 5-course dinner cruise (or both!), you’ll have a splendid evening to remember.
About The Saffron Cruise
The Saffron Cruise is a two-story boat, which has a “Moon Deck” upper level (modeled after the Banyan Tree’s famous “Moon Bar”) and a well appointed, air-conditioned dining area below deck. The cruise leaves from the ICON Siam Pier 2 on the Chao Phraya River. The Sunset cruise departs at 5:30pm and returns at 7:00pm and costs 550THB. The Dinner cruise departs at 7:10pm and returns at 10:10pm and costs 3,200THB.
What We Loved Most About The Cruise
When we were invited to partake in the cruise, I admit both my wife and I were a bit skeptical. The potential heat, the sway of the river, a too-crowded space, etc. were all factors that almost kept us from joining. And, admittedly, we’re just not fans of the more “touristy” boats on the river with lots of neon lights and loud music.
However, we couldn’t have been more wrong and, ultimately more delighted in the entire experience.
For the sunset cruise portion, we remained on the upper deck and enjoyed cocktails and typical bar hors d’oeuvres (there are other appetizers and other items available to eat). The boat ride was breezy and cool and the sights were better than expected – especially watching the sun set over Wat Arun!
After docking to pick up additional passengers for the dinner portion, we were invited below deck. The experience was excellent in every way – the food was delicious, the service impeccable and the entertainment traditional. We enjoy all five of the courses, each presenting a typical Thai dish in a unique and thoughtful way.
For us, one of the best parts of the experience was taking a break between courses and wandering to the top level to experience the cruise at night. The Moon Deck has a DJ playing great lounge music and the city, while amazing by day, is simply spectacular at night.
Things To Consider If You Go
Two points to take into consideration: First, the sunset cruise is definitely family-friendly. There was a family with school-aged children with us and it’s a fun and unique experience for a very modest price.
Second, if you choose to stay (or just join) for the Dinner cruise, be sure to bring a sweater! We found the A/C in the dining area a bit overwhelming, which prompted us to take a break between dinner courses and go outside.
