Basketball programs may enroll kids from as young as 5 years old and considering that ideally kids should get at least one hour of physical activity every day, learning basketball is an easy and fun way to allow them to incorporate sports into their daily schedules. Even if it’s just starting to learn to throw and catch a larger ball by the time they are age 3 and 4, it’s a gentle way to introduce them to basketball and have fun with the whole family. Having a basketball hoop at home is a great way for them to start to sharpen their skills and encourage a love for sports, just make sure you adjust the hoop to their height! Unless they are unusually tall for their age it’s recommended small children usually use shorter 6-foot rims.
Why Choose Basketball?
Dribbling, throwing, catching and pivoting improves gross motor skills by engaging all the major muscle groups and they are key reasons why young kids who grow up with a love for basketball show an improved flexibility and endurance as well as fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Playing basketball also improves a child’s ability to communicate and develop good social skills solve as young athletes learn from an early age how to collaborate in a team atmosphere, pay attention to others, listen carefully to instructions and respond accordingly. Plus, experiencing the benefits and difficulties of healthy competition in any from a young age prepares children for failures later in life.
