At Shrewsbury Riverside, we are always looking for ways to integrate technology and utilise an evidence-based approach to our sports programme. The use of GPS, or Global Positioning System, allows for the tracking of distance, speed, and movement patterns during training and match play. This information can be incredibly valuable for coaches and athletes, providing a better understanding of training loads and match performance.
For the first time, our strength and conditioning team has begun implementing GPS technology across the sports programme to enhance our training and match play. Using GPS units to track student athletes, we can identify times of high training and match loads, allowing coaches to adjust training programmes to prevent injury and optimise performance.
During training, GPS units provide data on the distance covered, speed and acceleration, and intensity of each student. This data is then used to monitor progress, highlight areas of weakness or inefficiency, and ensure that their training matches the requirements of each individual sport. GPS technology also allows for personalised training programmes to be developed for each student based on their individual strengths and weaknesses.
In fixtures, GPS units are used to track on-pitch performance and adjust training programmes accordingly. The GPS technology also allows coaches to monitor individual players across the seasons and school year to ensure they are not completing an excessive amount of work and or risking injury.
Within the curriculum, our A Level sports students are using the units to gain hands-on experience within their technology in sports modules. Access to real-world equipment allows these students to understand and apply information regarding sports analysis, and fitness testing. In addition, GCSE PE students are using the GPS units to collect and present data in their personal exercise plans, analysing their data to devise and measure specific performance goals.
The integration of GPS technology into our school sports and physical education programmes is an exciting step forward and a chance to gain a deeper understanding of training and performance.
