Keeping true to who we are organically, Bangkok Kids!
Welcome to the first of our Bangkok Faces Kids features. These blog posts have been created to shine a spotlight on the many talents of kids living and studying in Bangkok. Those who are going above and beyond their regular school studies and looking at ways making a difference to the community by using either their budding philanthropic or entrepreneurial skills.
This month we take a look at Rex Svensson a year 10 student with a passion for video editing and a desire to make social change where possible using his communication and collaborative skills.
What’s Your Name & Which School To Do Go To?
My Name is Rex Svensson, I’m currently 15 and a year 10 Student at Nist International School where I have been studying for 7 years. I am from Sweden and Thailand and have grown up in both Singapore and Bangkok. I was born in Singapore and I moved to Bangkok in 2010. For the past 10 years, I have lived and worked in Bangkok.
What Job Title Have You Created?
I am the founder of Rex Studios and I collaborate in the filming and editing of videos for different clients. I am passionate about writing and creating films and hope that both areas will eventually lead me into my future career. I have always been a creative individual but I was never very good at editing videos, thats where resilience stepped in! The first few videos on my channel are not great but even though I was not good in the beginning, I persevered and continued to post videos just because I enjoyed it. Every video was an improvement from the last and I have realised that everyone has to start somewhere. I decided to continue learning more about my craft and to never give up on what I really enjoyed doing, I believe you have to learn from your mistakes and move forward.
Ever since I was a kid I was obsessed with creating stories and filming videos on my family’s computer. Obviously at the time no one saw these videos, they were just for myself and my family. Throughout my childhood, I began experimenting with photography and youtube, until finally I realised that this was something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I started uploading more videos to Youtube and welcomed all the feedback I received from viewers. As I started to improve, more people began asking me to help them with editing and filming their projects. Filmmaking is now a substantial part of my life and I am going to do everything possible to turn it into a viable career.
As I am currently a student, it can be stressful while balancing school and filmmaking. Especially since I started my Youtube channel. There are hundreds of viewers who are waiting for me to upload another video. This has put a lot of pressure on me, however I have now appreciate the importance of balance in my life even though I have always been a very ambitious person.
What’s Your Dream Job?
My dreams have changed slightly over the years. At first, I wanted to continue filming and editing videos for clients. However, as I started creating my own films, I realized that I wanted to work in the movie industry. I would like to direct and create my own short films during film school. My plan is to earn money through simple editing and filming jobs from clients. Once I have saved up a fair amount of money, I would then invest it into creating my own films. I would also apply to jobs on feature film sets, to understand and study the dynamics of creating a film. I will start by directing smaller films, and I will work my way up into becoming a director of a successful, blockbuster feature film! Watch this space…..
Awareness Of Social Change.
I strongly believe that everyone has a voice and the power to enforce social change. I communicate my beliefs through my videos. I have an audience who admires and listens to what I have to say, which is why in times of injustice, I need to use my platform to educate and inspire. Recently, the world has come together to enforce social change. The ‘black lives matter’ movement is something that is misunderstood and it is important that everyone is educated about the injustice and discrimination in the world. I created a short video which shows the little progress we have made in the world since Martin Luther King gave his iconic speech “I have a dream.” In the description of the video I provided links to places where people can donate to the cause and educate themselves with more information about the movement. Check-out my video on the topic of the black lives matter movement: https://youtu.be/KSJZuDfgemk
Who Or What Inspires You?
I seek inspiration from almost everything I see, colours, movies, magazines, music, shows and nature. I hope to be involved in several successful films in the future. I am always surrounded by inspiration. I admire my parents because they are both successful individuals who have achieved so many great things. They have inspired me to dream big, and be an individual.
I am the product of two amazing people and hope to DREAM BIG and follow in their footsteps!
What Message Do You Have For Other Young People?
“If you continue doing the things that you are passionate about, you can and will achieve incredible things.”
