6 Tips on Managing LEGO

Pretty much every kid loves LEGO. But organizing and storing thousands of independent pieces is no easy task. With that in mind, here are 6 solutions to help keep an ever-expanding LEGO collection under control.

1. Brik Tiles

Rather than building LEGO structures on the floor, Brik Tile lets kids stick LEGO to their bedroom wall, the bathroom door, the kitchen fridge, or anyone else in the house you’re happy to let them get creative. The 10″x10″ Brik Tiles can be stuck multiple times to virtually any smooth surface and fit snugly together without any gaps. Your kids can have fun creating pixel art with the flat 1×1 Briks, while Brik Clips provide adults with a handy place to hang keys, photos or artwork. A Kickstarter project, the tiles will start shipping this fall; if you can’t wait, improvise with regular LEGO plates and strong adhesives!

2. Lil n Hip Minifigure Boards

While kids love LEGO minifigs, storing them can be an issue. A certain percentage of figures and their accessories inevitably get lost down the back of the sofa or vacuumed up after being left on the floor. But no more. Bangkok-based Lil n Hip has designed a range of “Play ‘n Display” boards that let kids hang their minifigs on their bedroom wall. These innovative display boards can either be bought without minifigs, or purchased pre-filled with themed Star Wars, Minecraft, Super Hero and Lego Friends figures. Boards can also be customised to suit your kids’ collections!

3. Sorting LEGO: Function vs Color

Storing and sorting methods for LEGO are pretty numerous, but arranging by function and color are two of the more popular solutions. But is one method best? It really comes down to personal preference. In simple terms, storing by color is great for younger kids who just want to build simple shapes and structures, like an all-red skyscraper. But for older children creating more complex designs, it’s probably best to store individual parts together based on their function, making it easier to locate essential pieces such as hinges or doors.

4. IKEA Table Hacks

LEGO might be great fun to play with, but it’s not so much fun when it comes to tidying up. But instead of rushing out to buy an official LEGO table as a storage solution, you could always create a budget-friendly table of your own using Ikea products. There are now a number of innovative Ikea LEGO hacks that you can follow to build your very own storage table. As well as being a more affordable alternative, you can get the kids involved and build the table together – turning the task into a fun and creative project.

5. Storage Cabinets

A small LEGO collection can easily be kept in a couple of plastic tubs. But as the years go by and the collection grows, you could end up having tubs in every room of the house. How to solve this potential storage nightmare? One way is by keeping your LEGO together in a small-parts storage cabinet system – the kind you’ll see in repair shops for storing small items such as nails or brackets. As well as keeping things tidy, these super-functional cabinets make finding parts a whole lot easier. Find them at home improvement stores or through large online retailers.

6. Brickstore

Brickstore is a relatively new local venture selling a variety of LEGO solutions, including wooden storage and play tables, on-the-go boxes in various sizes with a LEGO plate as the box cover, brick trays for containing the mess while building, and more. Created by a parent of LEGO-loving kids, Brickstore offers functional options for managing ever-growing brick collections.
