For dads looking to spend some quality time with the kids, here are 5 great activities in Bangkok worth checking out. [Updated December 2018]
1. Fishing at Bungsamran Lake
Enjoy some solitude by the banks of Bungsamran in Nawamin Soi 42… and prepare to potentially catch a monster! Lurking in the dark depths of the lake are over 50 different types of fish including three huge freshwater species — the Mekong giant catfish, the giant Siamese carp and the arapaima. Brace yourself: each of these fish can reach over 100 kg, so you’ll have a really battle on your hands if one takes the bait. After a morning beside the water, grab a spot of lunch at Bungsamran’s restaurant, which serves both Thai and seafood dishes.
2. Go-karting at RCA
Engines at the ready! Nothing beats tearing around the hairpin turns of Bangkok’s biggest indoor go-karting track. There are three different sized karts available for ages 8 to 13, 12+ and 15+ — so dads can either sit by the track and watch the action or hop in a kart and compete with the kids. There’s also a panoramic bar and restaurant here, so everyone can dig into a family meal once the victory laps are over.
3. Laser Tag at LAZGAM
Located on the 5th floor of the Holiday Inn on Sukhumvit 22, LAZGAM is a neon-lit indoor laser tag zone modelled on a sci-fi-style spaceship maze. Players aged 7 and over have to make their way through a futuristic 500-square-meter labyrinth with sessions lasting 15 minutes. You can pick from a variety of scenarios including the team-based “Classic Challenger” game or “Last Survivors” – a game where every player goes solo in a tense battle for individual glory.
4. Flow-riding at Flow House
A great way to get active, cool off and have a whole lot of fun at the same time! Welcome to Flow House – an artificial surfing simulator that lets you bodyboard or flowboard (a combination of surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding and other boarding-style activities). Never been near a surfboard before? No problem. Along with advice to get you started, there’s a practice rope for the kids (and nervous dads) to cling onto – helping you get steadily accustomed to the waves. Suitable for ages 6+.
5. Movie Date at a Kid-Friendly Theatre
Have a movie date at the Happiness World Screen of SF World Cinema CentralWorld or the newer Kids Cinema at EmQuartier or Mega Bangna. Each theatre has been designed specifically for families, with manageable spaces, sofas and other comfy seating. In the case of the Lazada Theatre, kids can also access a play area with a ball pit and a slide during the film. No one minds if your child needs to get up and walk around, and no need to worry that they are distracting other moviegoers. Check in advance if a kid-friendly flick is showing and come 20 or so minutes after the designated showtime to avoid the ads and previews (many of which are not child-friendly). Other than that, the movie-going experience with children has never been easier or more relaxing!
