Singapore has consistently demonstrated high achievement in its children’s reading, mathematics and science abilities, and the Singaporean curriculum is growing in popularity around the globe, including Thailand. What are its particular strengths? And is it the right model for your child?
In a nutshell, Singapore Curriculum focuses on academic excellence in teaching and learning. Teaching is fit-for-purpose and pragmatic, drawing on a range of pedagogical traditions from the East and West. In addition to Intellectual development, it also stresses the Moral, Physical, Social and Aesthetic domains.
Nursery & Kindergarten Years
The Singapore Curriculum recognizes that the early years is a time of significant human development, when children pick up independence, initiative, decision-making ability, creativity, early literacy and numeracy skills, the ability to learn, the ability to relate to others, verbal communication skills, and feelings of self-worth. Young children enjoy observing, exploring, imagining, discovering, investigating, collecting information and sharing knowledge. These early learning experiences are enhanced by caring adults who promote high levels of interaction to promote positive attitudes to learning, which is achieved through play and structured learning.
By the end of kindergarten, children should know what is right and what is wrong; be willing to share and take turns with others; be able to relate to others; be able to listen and speak with understanding; be comfortable and happy with themselves; have developed physical co-ordination and healthy habits; and love their families, friends, teachers and school.
Primary Programme
The strengths of the Singapore education system are grounded in several core subjects, namely, English, Chinese Language, Mathematics and Science. To ensure students develop not just the mind but the body and spirit as well, these subjects are supplemented with Music, Art, Personal Social and Health Education, ICT and Physical Education. The primary curriculum also equips students with the necessary life skills; students must learn how to be able to apply the skills and knowledge acquired.
Secondary Programme
In secondary school, students are offered a combination of core and elective subjects. The core subjects include English Language, Chinese Language, Mathematics, Combined Humanities, and Science. These ensure that students experience a broad-based and balanced education while the electives cater to a range of their interests and abilities. The students also have the option of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and A-Levels.
