Discover Bangkok with Young Explorers Club, Thailand

As long-time Bangkok residents, we often fall into a rut when it comes to finding things to do. We visit the same places and rarely venture outside of our comfort zone. In this regard, the Young Explorers Club, Thailand offers a breath of fresh air, a wonderful change in the weekend routine that lets children see Bangkok from their own perspective – one that is engaging, striking the right balance between information dissemination and hands-on activities.

“The Young Explorers Club organizes interactive full and half-day tours, to enrich and enhance children’s knowledge about Thai culture and customs,” explained our hosts Deepakshi and Simon. “Initially, tours are for children ages 5 to 9. Such trips cater to the needs of the young – carefully considering the right time, place and theme – all within a safe, educational and fun atmosphere.”

We joined the club’s inaugural tour, “Life of a Monk”, on Sunday, 17 May. It involved five children and 11 adults, including hosts and guides. The adventure began with a morning cruise down the Chao Phraya River on a specially chartered long-tailed boat. The first stop was Pak Klong Talad, Bangkok’s vibrant, bustling flower market. Here, the children engaged in a mini scavenger hunt, looking for various types of flowers, which they documented with stickers in a special workbook. They then made their own garlands from jasmine, roses and “dok rak”, or love flowers.

Without getting into too much detail, the rest of the day involved zipping around old Bangkok on dedicated tuk tuks, visiting a lovely temple and meeting a monk, exploring the mystical amulet market, and having a delicious lunch by the river. The entire multi-sensory tour was a delight – truly a great Sunday activity for the entire family, where kids and parents alike had a blast!

The next tour dates are on the weekend of 30-31 May, and 6-7 June — all offered at a 50% introductory discount. When tours are up and running regularly, a portion of the proceeds will be given to different local charities.
