Bangkok International Children’s Theatre Festival (BICT Fest) 2018

Exciting news! BICT Fest is back, with lots of performances, workshops and talks over a two-week period, starting from 15 May 2018.

BICT 2018

This year, there will be nine productions from six countries and Thailand, featuring “French Highlights”: “Flaque” by Defacto and “Sarabande” by Noémi Boutin & Jörg Müller. Performances take place at Sodsai Pantoomkomol Center of Dramatic Arts of Chulalongkorn University, Creative Industries at M Theatre, and Bangkok Arts & Culture Centre (BACC).

Other line-ups include new circus, contemporary dance, puppetry and mime acts such as:

  • “Four Go Wild in Wellies” by Indepen-dance (Scotland)
  • GABEZ Show by GABEZ (Japan)
  • “horses, a small scaled Thai re-creation” by kabinet k (Belgium)
  • “PRIMO” by Alfredo Zinola and Felipe Gonzalez (Germany)
  • “Puno” by Papermoon Puppet Theatre (Indonesia)
  • “Starwars” by Babymime (Thailand)
  • “The Rice Child” by Crescentmoon Theatre (Thailand)

There will be six workshops offered this year. The first one is “Letters To The Sky: Creative Puppets Making” by Papermoon Puppet Theater – Indonesia. It is for those who would love to send letters to their beloved ones who have passed away; you will have a chance to make puppets out of the papers representing loved ones.

Date: Fri, 18 May, 1pm to 3pm
Venue: Blue Box Studio, 2nd Floor / M Theatre
Price: 900 baht (one child with one parent or guardian)
Limited to 10 families; book here.

The second workshop includes “Creative Dance Workshop” by Independ-Dance 4 – Scotland. Aimed at children ages 3 to 5, this workshop will build on the themes explored in the live performance, which include play, nature, fun, friendship and trust.

Date: Sat, 19 May, 4pm to 4.45pm
Venue: Blue Box Studio, 2nd Floor / M Theatre
Price: 600 baht (one child with one parent or guardian)

“Juggling: Fundamental Technic” by Guillaume Martinet, Companie Defracto – France is set to create a language of juggling and movement. This adults-only class will focus on acquisition of bodily awareness, construction of a shared “technical” language.

Venue: Studio 4th floor, BACC

“Play with Newspaper Puppet” by Ladda Kongdach, Crescent Moon Theatre – Thailand gets participants (ages 10+) to practice making simple [hand] puppets from newspaper, and breathe life into the puppets through creative drama and storytelling.

“A workshop with Jörg Müller: Juggling and Object Manipulation” by Jörg Müller – France offers a rare chance for children ages 9 to 13 to experiment with simple juggling and object manipulation with a renown French juggling artist.

Date: Sat, 26 May, 3pm to 4pm
Venue: Foyer, Sodsai Pantoomkomol Centre for Dramatic Arts, Chulalongkorn University
Price: 500 baht

And finally, “Workshop about PRIMO” by Alfredo Zinola & Felipe González – Germany proposes a moment for children ages 2 to 7 to reflect about the performance PRIMO and to experience some simple movement improvisation inspired by the performance.

The BICT Fest Forum will host a series of free insightful talks that will examine important themes and topics that complement the performances. The topics include:

1. “But What is the New Circus?” by Vanessa Silvy, of the French Embassy in Thailand and former Head of Circus and Puppetry Arts at Institut Français Paris (2 sessions available)

2. “Creating Inclusive Platforms for Young Audiences” by Fiona Ferguson, creative programme director of Imaginate, Scotland

3. “Applying Circus Art in Communities” by Thanupon Yindee (former Makhampom Arts Space member)
